Last month, the One Percent Safer Foundation funded health and safety training for 50 staff and volunteers of the Kiserem Epilepsy Foundation (KEF), north west of Nairobi in Kenya. KEF provides employment support and raises awareness to fight stigma associated with epilepsy in Kiambu County.

The aim of the course was to strengthen knowledge and awareness of occupational health and safety among staff, volunteers and caregivers, to improve the organisation’s capacity to identify, prevent and respond to workplace and programme-related hazards and to establish and formalise essential OSH policies and procedures.

The three-day training course covered hazard types from chemicals to unsafe lifting, basic risk assessment and controls, emergency preparedness and first aid awareness. The trainers mixed presentations with case studies and small group discussions and paid particular attention to managing epilepsy-related crises safely. The course also involved developing safety signage for KEF’s headquarters and formalising the non-profit’s health and safety procedures.

We are proud to have been able to support KEF, plus multiple other NGOs including Kimbo Amazing Women and HopeEthiopia, to protect their staff and volunteers and everyone they work with.
